Transforming Higher Education: Economy, Democracy, and the University Introduction: In today's society, the role of higher education is more crucial than ever before. As technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented rate, the need for a well-educated workforce and informed citizens has become paramount. However, the traditional model of higher education is undergoing a significant transformation, one that threatens to undermine its very purpose. The university, once a beacon of knowledge and intellectual curiosity, is now being shaped by the forces of the market and the ideology of neoliberalism. This book examines the dangers and opportunities of this transformation, arguing that the future of higher education depends on our ability to understand and adapt to these changes. Part I: Historical Transformation of the University Chapter 1: The Evolution of the University The modern university has its roots in the medieval European institutions of learning, where scholars and intellectuals gathered to study and debate the arts, sciences, and philosophy. Over time, the university has transformed into a complex system of knowledge production, with a focus on research, specialization, and professional training. However, this evolution has not been without controversy, as the university has often been criticized for prioritizing technical skills over critical thinking and humanistic values.
