Japanese New York Migrant Artists and Self-Reinvention on the World Stage: A Study of the Evolution of Technology and Personal Paradigms for Survival Introduction: In the vibrant city of New York, one can find a significant number of Japanese nationals who have made the city their home, seeking to realize their dreams and aspirations in various fields such as design, fashion, music, and art. These creative individuals are part of the so-called "creative class" and represent a growing segment of the neoliberal economy. However, their journey to success is often marked by challenges, and many of them end up working illegally in low-paying jobs. This ethnographic portrait by Olga Sooudi explores the lives of these Japanese migrants living and working in NYC, delving into the reasons that drive them to abandon their middle-class comfort and homes in search of a new life. Chapter 1: The Grocery Store and Restaurant The story begins at a grocery store and restaurant where hopeful migrants work part-time while pursuing their ambitions.
