Living the Asian Century: An Undiplomatic Memoir As I sit down to write this memoir, I am filled with a sense of nostalgia and wonder at the incredible journey that has brought me to where I am today. Born in poverty in the 1950s, I never imagined that I would one day become a prominent politician and diplomat, let alone play a role in shaping the destiny of my beloved country, Singapore. But life had other plans, and here I am, ready to share my story with the world. Growing up in a multicultural neighborhood, I was surrounded by people from all walks of life, each with their own unique experiences and perspectives. This diversity would shape my worldview and inform my future endeavors, as I learned to appreciate the beauty of differences and the strength of unity in diversity. My parents, both immigrants themselves, instilled in me the value of hard work and determination, and encouraged me to pursue my dreams, no matter how lofty they may have seemed. My journey began with a government scholarship that sent me to the University of Singapore, where I studied law and economics. It was there that I discovered my passion for politics and international relations, and I knew that I wanted to make a difference in the world. Four years later, I found myself in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where I would spend the next several decades serving my country and representing it on the global stage.
Living the Asian Century: An Undiplomatic Memoir
