Nowhere in Africa, written by Stefanie Zweig University of Wisconsin Press2007 , is an extraordinary tale of a Jewish family who flees the Nazi regime in 1938 for a remote farm in Kenya. The story follows Walter Redlich, his wife Jettel, and their five-year-old daughter Regina as they adapt to their new life in a harsh and unfamiliar environment. The book begins with the Redlich family leaving their comfortable existence in Germany to escape the Nazi regime. They settle on a farm in Kenya, where they must learn to adjust to a completely different way of life. Walter, the father, is resigned to working the farm as a caretaker, while Jettel struggles to adapt to the new surroundings and customs. Their daughter, Regina, quickly embraces the countryside, learning the local language and making friends with the cook's son, Owuor. As the war rages on in Europe, the family's relationships with each other and their new environment become increasingly complicated. Jettel grows more self-assured, while Walter becomes haunted by the life they left behind. In 1946, when the war finally ends, Walter decides to return to his homeland to help rebuild a new Germany, putting his family into turmoil once again.
