The book explores themes of race, identity, belonging, and the challenges of growing up in a society that often forces people to choose between fitting in and standing out. The Plot: Act I: Setting the Stage The story begins with Tiphanie's parents deciding to move their family from their longtime home in a predominantly Black neighborhood to the affluent suburb of Brent Hills, Colorado. Tiphanie is initially excited about the prospect of a new life, but as she settles into her new surroundings, she realizes that she is the only Black student at her high school, and she feels like an outsider among her wealthy and privileged classmates. She struggles to fit in and finds solace in her old community, where she feels seen and accepted for who she is.
