The Retreat: A Haunting Tale of Love, Loss, and Cultural Clashes In the small town of Kenora, Ontario, outside of which lies a remote island where an eighteen-year-old Ojibway boy named Raymond Seymour was left for dead by a local policeman in 1973, the Byrd family arrives at the Retreat, a commune run by the enigmatic Doctor Amos. The Doctor is known for his bewildering truisms and his daily naked baths in the pond at the edge of the Retreat, while young Everett Byrd watches from the bushes. Lizzy, the eldest of the Byrd children, longs for something more profound than what the Retreat has to offer, and it is during this time that she meets Raymond, an encounter that will change everything.
