Burchell's African Odyssey: Retracing the Return Journey, 1812-1815 In November 1810, a young English botanist named William John Burchell embarked on a groundbreaking journey that would change the course of scientific history. Landing in Cape Town, South Africa, he set out on a four-year, 700-kilometer expedition into the heart of southern Africa, braving rough terrain and harsh conditions to collect over 6,300 specimens of plants, bulbs, insects, reptiles, and mammals. Despite the challenges he faced, Burchell's passion for discovery and exploration drove him forward, leaving behind a legacy of paintings and illustrations that continue to inspire researchers today. However, little is known about his return journey, which spanned roughly thirty-two months between 1812 and 1815. This book seeks to fill that gap, retracing Burchell's epic odyssey from near Kuruman in the Northern Cape to the Eastern Cape and back along the southern Cape coast to Cape Town.
