A Grammar of Modern Baba Malay Mouton Grammar Library [MGL] Book 90 Introduction: In an ever-evolving world, technology plays a vital role in shaping our lives. From the invention of the wheel to the creation of artificial intelligence, technology has been the driving force behind human progress. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and the rapid pace of technological advancements can sometimes lead to the marginalization of certain groups, such as the speakers of endangered languages. One such language, Baba Malay, is at risk of disappearing forever due to the lack of documentation and preservation efforts. This book aims to fill that gap by providing a comprehensive reference grammar of modern Baba Malay, a critically endangered Austronesian-based contact language with a Sinitic substrate. Background: Baba Malay, also known as Babia Malay, is a language spoken by less than 1000 people in Singapore and less than 100 people in Malacca, Malaysia. It is a contact language formed through intermarriage between Hokkien-speaking male traders and indigenous women in the Malay Peninsula. The language's sociohistorical background and circumstances of endangerment are crucial to understanding its significance and the need for preservation. Phonology: The phonology of Baba Malay is characterized by a unique blend of Austronesian and Sinitic sounds, reflecting the diverse linguistic heritage of its speakers. The language has a simple vowel system consisting of /i/, /e/, /a/, /o/, and /u/, with a few diphthongs and triphthongs.
