The Other Women's Lib: Gender and Body in Japanese Women's Fiction In the 1960s, a new wave of feminist literature emerged in Japan, challenging dominant models of femininity and offering a fresh perspective on gender and body. The Other Women's Lib provides the first systematic analysis of this literary feminist discourse, focusing on the works of three prominent female fiction writers - Kono Taeko, Takahashi Takako, and Kurahashi Yumiko - who dared to defy societal norms and expectations. Their narratives subverted hegemonic discourses of femininity, exposing the oppressive gender roles that confined women to the negative pole of a binary opposition to men. The book delves into four tropes persistently employed by these writers to protest misogyny and feminine stereotypes: the disciplinary masculine gaze, feminist misogyny, odd bodies, and female homoeroticism. These narrative strategies aim to sever the discursive connection between bodily sex and gender, paving the way for a less restrictive vision of female subjectivity in modern Japan.
The Other Women's Lib: Gender and Body in Japanese Women's Fiction The Other Women's Lib

The Other Women's Lib: Gender and Body in Japan Women's Fiction The Other Women's Lib
