Getting Organized in Vietnam: Understanding the Evolution of Civil Society In the late 1950s, during the height of the Vietnam War, there was little room or opportunity for non-state voluntary organizations and associations to form in Vietnam, especially in the north. With few exceptions, only those established by the Communist Party and other state agencies were permitted. However, since the doi moi (renewal) period in the mid-1980s, the picture has changed considerably, and the Vietnamese people have been getting together to voice their collective and specific interests vis-à-vis the state. This book, "Getting Organized in Vietnam presents original case studies of the gamut of organizations in Vietnam today and analyzes their relationships with umbrella state organizations, which are themselves evolving. The contributors also examine current thinking about the nature of the state in Vietnam, particularly in relation to civil society.
