Drama and Contemplation: Meditative Aesthetics in the 16th Century Since the late Middle Ages, there has been a growing trend towards differentiated theories of meditation that have had a profound impact on the aesthetics of spiritual theater in the German-speaking world of the 16th century. This study reconstructs the concept of "Betrachtung" (contemplation) as the leading model for the reception of spiritually-oriented theatrical forms. Through material-based investigations, it examines the influence of meditative traditions on dramatic themes, scene types, and figure concepts, as well as models of affective and imaginative impact. At the center of the study is a comparative analysis of dramas with death and passion themes, which challenges the prevailing image of Protestant skepticism towards religious plays. The study begins by exploring the evolution of meditation and its impact on the development of modern knowledge. It highlights the need to understand the process of technological evolution and the possibility of developing a personal paradigm for perceiving this process as the basis for human survival and unity in a warring state. The author argues that the study of meditation and its role in shaping the aesthetics of spiritual theater can provide valuable insights into the interconnectedness of different confessions and the inner conflicts within each confession.
