Conceptual Transfer as an Areal Factor in Spatial Conceptualizations in Mainland Southeast Asia Pacific Linguistics [PL] 656 As we delve into the intricate world of Mainland Southeast Asia Pacific Linguistics, it becomes evident that this region boasts an incredible wealth of linguistic diversity, comprising numerous languages and countless varieties of genetically diverse language families. However, despite this richness, the area is often characterized as a prime example of linguistic convergence, where languages share a remarkable degree of similarity in their spatial reference systems. This phenomenon is exemplified in the use of spatial terminology in Thai, Khmer, Lao, and Vietnamese languages, highlighting the prevalence of conceptual borrowing due to language contact as an areal defining feature. Through a meticulous analysis of field-based data, this study seeks to uncover the extent to which cultural impact influences the choice of spatial language encoding, challenging the assumption that speakers' cultural backgrounds play a less significant role in shaping their linguistic preferences. By examining the method and structure of argumentation, the investigation provides a valuable model for exploring other cognitive dimensions within the Southeast Asian context, offering a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between language, culture, and perception.
