A Cobbler's Tale: A Novel of Tales of the Cobbler 1 In the early 20th century, a massive wave of Eastern European immigration hit the New World, bringing with it hopes and dreams of a better life. Among these hopefuls was Pincus Potasznik, a Jewish cobbler who left his pregnant wife and three young children behind to sail for America in search of a new life on the bustling Lower East Side of Manhattan. The journey across the Atlantic on the SS Amerika steamship was traumatic, but it was there that he met Jakob Adler, a young man fleeing an accidental murder of a notorious crime boss in Warsaw. Together, they found opportunities in New York, but it was not an easy time for Jewish immigrants. A few years later, while enjoying the fruits of his labor and with Jakob's unlawful contributions, Pincus realized he had made a terrible mistake. With the outbreak of World War I, the opportunity to return to his family had almost closed, and he was faced with a difficult decision: risk going back to Europe to rescue them from a war they could all die in or wait in New York and build his fortune.
Cobbler's Tale: A Novel of Tales of the Cobbler
