The Roots of Urban Renaissance Gentrification and the Struggle over Harlem Harlem, once known as the epicenter of African American culture and the birthplace of the Harlem Renaissance, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent decades. Today, the neighborhood boasts gleaming new shopping centers and refurbished row houses, bearing little resemblance to the impoverished and neglected urban landscape of the mid-twentieth century. This transformation, known as the "Second Renaissance is the subject of Brian Goldstein's thought-provoking book, The Roots of Urban Renaissance Gentrification and the Struggle over Harlem. Goldstein traces the origins of this transformation back to the 1960s, when young activists, inspired by the civil rights movement, began to resist city officials and fight for control over their own destiny. They recognized urban renewal as just another example of a power structure that gave black Americans little voice in the decisions that most affected them. These activists demanded the right to plan their own redevelopment and founded community-based organizations to achieve this goal.
