Zen Conquests: Buddhist Transformations in Contemporary Vietnam In the late twentieth century, a humble monk transformed a small village temple on the outskirts of Hanoi into a magnificent monastery and meditation center called Thien Vien Sung Phuc, providing a space for monastics and lay Buddhists to learn and practice Zen meditation. This transformation not only replaced the original temple but also attracted over a thousand Buddhists to its weekly services, making it a successful endeavor. The story of Thien Vien Sung Phuc and its followers is not just an ethnography, but also a compelling look at how the discourses of Buddhist Modernism were incorporated at a local level, and why new constituencies of followers are drawn to Zen Buddhism in contemporary Vietnam. The Zen tradition purports to be a continuation of the fourteenth-century Truc Lam Zen School, but it is more closely related to Modernist versions of Buddhism practiced by Western converts in North America than anything Vietnamese.
