War of a Thousand Deserts: Indian Raids and the US-Mexican War - A New Narrative of Nineteenth-Century History The early 1830s marked a turning point in the history of North America, as decades of relative peace between northern Mexicans and the indigenous peoples they called "barbarians" gave way to a cycle of violence that would last for fifteen years. This period saw devastating raids and counter-raids across ten Mexican states, leaving thousands dead, ruining the economy, and depopulating the countryside, ultimately creating vast man-made deserts where once thriving settlements existed. The interethnic war not only had a profound impact on the region but also informed and emboldened American arguments in favor of seizing Mexican territory.
