The Environmental Legacy of the UC Natural Reserve System: A Prototype for Conservation and Land Stewardship In 1965, a group of forward-thinking University of California (UC) faculty members came together to establish the UC Natural Reserve System (NRS), a prototype for conservation and land stewardship that has since grown to encompass over 75,000 wildland acres across California. This book tells the story of how these individuals, along with conservation-minded donors, landowners, state and federal agencies, and private conservation organizations, founded what is now the world's largest university-administered natural reserve system. The system includes a diverse range of ecosystems, from coastal tide pools to inland deserts, lush wetlands to ancient forests, and vernal pools to oak savannas, providing a unique opportunity for teaching, research, and public service within protected landscapes. The UC NRS was established in response to the destruction of the faculty members' research plots and teaching spots due to development and habitat degradation.
