Home > News > Compliance > New York City Expands Sexual Harassment Protections New York City Expands Sexual Harassment Protections By: Christine Simmonds, JD | Last updated: October 2018 New York City has expanded its sexual harassment protections by amending the city’s Human Rights Law to include a broader definition of sexual harassment and additional protected characteristics, such as gender identity and expression. The New York City Council passed the legislation on April 17, 2019, and it was signed into law by Mayor Bill de Blasio on May 9, 2019. The amendments to the city’s Human Rights Law take effect immediately. Broader Definition of Sexual Harassment The amended law expands the definition of sexual harassment to include “any behavior” that is based on a person’s actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. This means that employers, landlords, and providers of goods and services must now take all allegations of sexual harassment seriously and investigate them thoroughly, regardless of the specific form of the behavior.
