China: How the Empire Fell and Asia's Transformations The Qing dynasty, China's last imperial regime, had attained unparalleled size and prosperity by the early twentieth century. However, within just a few months of 1911, the empire collapsed, marking the end of two millennia of imperial dominion and paving the way for a revolutionary path that would span most of the twentieth century. The 1911 Revolution not only ended the Qing dynasty but also sparked a series of revolutionary movements, from the National Revolution of the 1920s to the Communist Revolution and finally the Cultural Revolution. As we commemorate the centenary of this pivotal event in Chinese history, scholars are still debating its causes and implications. This book presents twelve essential contributions from leading historians, shifting the focus away from Sun Yatsen's relatively weak and divided revolutionary movement, which has been the subject of much previous research.
