He finds that his family's estate has been taken over by the Russian army and his mother has been killed. He vows to take revenge on the Russians for their brutality and oppression. Along with his loyal servant, he embarks on a journey through the war-torn lands of Poland and Ukraine, fighting against the Russian army and falling in love with a beautiful Ukrainian woman named Natalka. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Khmelnytsky Uprising, a period of great turmoil and violence in Eastern Europe. The story follows the struggles of the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth against the Russian Empire, and the clash of cultures between the Western Christian civilization of Poland and the Eastern Orthodox civilization of Russia.
