The Tragedy of Great Power Politics by Mearsheimer John J. Book Description: In this book, Mearsheimer argues that the international system is governed by the struggle for power and security among great states, which leads to a never-ending cycle of conflict and competition. He contends that this struggle is driven by the fear of being surrounded by rival powers and the desire to maximize one's own power and influence. This fear and desire lead to an arms race, a buildup of military capabilities, and a constant search for advantage over other states. As a result, the international system becomes increasingly unstable and prone to violent conflict. The author also argues that the current international order, based on the idea of sovereignty and non-intervention, is flawed and has led to a world where some states are more powerful than others, creating a power imbalance that perpetuates conflict and violence. He suggests that a new international order based on the principles of legitimacy and human rights could help to reduce the threat of war and promote peace and stability.
